More Wood Species

In 2002, the following (not yet certified) wood species were exported from Suriname.

  • Basralocus (Dicorynia guianensis)
  • Kopi (Goupia glabra)
  • Yellow Kabbes (Vatairea guianensis)
  • Greenheart (Tabebuia serratifolia)
  • Sali (Tetragastris spp.)
  • Purple Heart (Peltogyne paniculata, P. venosa)
  • Walaba (Eperua falcata)
  • Sumaruba (Simaruba officinalis)
  • Pakoeli (Platonia insignis)

Traditionally, the demand for Basralocus is high, about 50% of the total. Basralocus is used e.g. in hydraulic engineering.

The application of sustainable forest management does not only require a transformation for wood producers, but also for the (international) wood consumers. There will be more (relatively unknown) species on the market.

Sustainable forest management shifts the emphasis from a demand-driven market to a supply-driven market. With sustainable forest management it will be examined what the forest has to offer: intervention is only proportionally done so that the species composition of the forest does not change.

Consumers will now have to look more for  the woodcharacteristics, and less to the species. It will turn out that several relatively unknown woods are applicable.

On the website of Centre Wood (GB), FSC Netherlands and of several Dutch wood suppliers, there  are lists with the availability and characteristics of the wood.
