Product Development and Marketing

3a) Development of product and process standards
Presently, no standards exist among wood processing companies for specific products. To synchronize wood products in the wood processing sector, product (and process) standards must be formulated. Such standards present fixed product measures and fixed production lines that will bring uniformity in wood products. To develop these standards, consultations were be held with wood processing companies, and the final standards must be developed with the whole sector and the Bureau of Standards in Suriname (SSB). An initiative to the development of standards for floors and doors was taken in this project.

3b) Bevordering van marktkansen van minder gebruikte soortenSurinamese wood processing companies use a limited list of marketable wood species at the national market, and a very limited list at the international market. Research on lesser known, or actually lesser used, wood species is implemented in cooperation with Tropenbos International, to identify opportunity species and specify their characteristics (wood technology), as well as the development of treatment schemes and processing methods.

After the identification of marketable lesser used species, market research was implemented to identify opportunities at national and international markets for Surinamese wood products in general and lesser used species in specific. Based on the outcomes of the previous studies, promotional materials were developed that can be used by wood companies to promote lesser used species, both at national and international markets.
