Wood processing and local market

Annually, 150,000 m3 of round timber  is taken from  the Surinamese forest. The forestry sector aims at producing  substantial increase in production. Within the coming parents.

The market for round timber is around Paramaribo and Nickerie. Wood products that can be found are  Basralokus, Wana, Kopie, Gronfolo, Greenheart and Kwaries. The largest companies are Bruynzeel Suriname Wood Maatschappij NV (BSH) and some Asian companies.

The primary wood processing industry consists of 48 permanent sawmills and a small saw 70 mobile units. There is an increasing demand for mobile sawmills in the forest.
The present capacity for sawing logs is underutilized (vs. 600,000 m3 150,000 m3). The machine park is mostly old and there is little use of modern sawing and drying techniques. Only a few companies, which focus on the export market, have modern equipment.

The local market in Suriname for sawn timber is limited and is barely growing. The proposed production increase will therefore have to focus on the export market. Export has high standards for quality and durability.

The secondary wood processing industry is limited. It involves the production of poles, floors, doors and plywood.

The wood processing industry has bundled into the General Union Surinamese Wood, ASHU.
