Forest Destinations and inventory

In 1999 CELOS was commissioned by the Ministry of Natural Resources to produce a provisional Forest classification map using satellite images, GIS applications, a comprehensive geographic database and field visits.
This map shows areas with Permanent Production Forest, Permanent Protected Forest, Permanent Specially Protected Forest, Conversion Forest and Temporary Maintained Forest.

"User suitable Maps and forest types maps" do not exist yet. These maps must indicate in which areas granting concessions and HKVs within the areas "Permanent Production Forests" is possible and is the basis for issuing concession.

To create these maps, a national forest inventory is needed. This will make timber stocks, growth and forest composition visible. SBB will create this inventory with an extensive method and using aerial photographs.

After this inventory, it is possible to determine forest management units from 50,000 - 100.00 ha (as prescribed in the forest, Article 10).
