No, certification is a voluntary choice and is not required. An entrepreneur chooses to  certify his / her company. The choice of the certification scheme and the certifying institution is free. Should you choose FSC,  then the certifier will use the national standard.

Who benefits from certification? top

Both the forestry company and the local people benefit from certification. Through the  certification of forest management and chain of trade, the company has access to a growing market in certified wood products. Moreover, the company gets a better image through certifying. The local people will be involved in forestry activities in the region  and have more input  and employment opportunities.
