Objectives PHS
Based on the principles of sustainable forest management the aim is to achieve an annual increase of around 100,000 m3 of timber, to a maximum of 1,000,000 m3 by 2012.
- The forestry industry is fully aware that the goal of increasing production and productivity is possible only if they have a trained personnel. The policy of the forestry industry is therefore aimed at broadening the supply of education and (practical) training and encouraging participation from companies. In addition, companies, within the limits of reasonableness opportunities for research and training to contribute to the practical research and training of experts in the forestry industry.
- In order to achieve the policy objectives set out here, the growth in employment and entrepreneurs in the forestry sector is a prerequisite. The prevailing negative image of the forest forms an obstacle. The forest industry will actively work to improve the prevailing image of the Surinamese forest, including the particular attention to the aspect of safety.
- To achieve the production target, there must be cooperation with the Surinamese government to work on specified modifications of the Forest Management Act that the prevailing concession policy results in increased production and stimulates the current system of levies and tariffs to be adjusted to it.
- Finally, encouraging responsible (sustainable) production and transparency of policy should lead to a favorable investment climate within the forest sector and thus increase access to external financing possibilities.
