Strategic Action Plan for the Forest Industry
The Timber Sector Platform Suriname (PHS) has stipulated its vision on the development of the Surinamese forest industry developed in a strategic action plan 2003-2008.
Key elements of the plan are:
- increasing production based on sustainable forest management
- an annual production increase of 100,000 m3 of roundwood, (up to 1 million m3)
- optimizing management of enterprises
- looking for solutions for environmental impacts, if any.
In order to responsibly increase the production of round timber, the following is required:
a well-trained staff
improved image of the Surinamese forest (especially regarding safety)
adjustments to the Forest Management Act, particularly regarding concession policy, system of levies and tariffs and vision on forest development.
favorable investment climate and access to external financing.
The forestry industry will contribute to the improvement of these points in the period 2003-2008.
