Why international recognition?

Through receiving an international recognition of the quality of the Surinamese forest management, consumers will be possibly that the wood is produced responsibly. This has great advantages:

• the producer can respond to changing demands of today's customers, especially the demand for sustainably produced timber
• Exporters have access to (new) markets for the intended increased production
• forest managers have access to other funding possibilities(donors, banks)
• forest managers and managers of processing industries will feature an (Evaluation) method to improve the business efficiently

To obtain international recognition will a changed process should be used. This requires (political) will and public support. During the various national workshops on forest certification in Paramaribo, a start was made with creating social support.

International recognition of forest management does not solve all problems. Policy measures, such as a different policy on user rights and rights of local residents inland, remain necessary.

The main goals of the strategic action plan, including responsible production increase and optimization of operations, can also be realized through "international recognition of the local forest management".
