What is happening in Suriname

Since 2000,  three national stakeholder workshops on sustainable forest management and certification have been held in Suriname. This topic has gained national awareness. After the last workshop, the Minister of National Resources has installed a working group.

A regional Capacity Building Strategy for Forest certification is drafted in 2003.

Some forestry companies are not waiting for national developments, and have started, together with WWF-Guianas, certifying their concessions and trade chain. Ansoe SA  has started  the FSC certification process. The preliminary investigation (pre-scoping) is already done, the main inspection is scheduled for early 2005.
