Industry
Those in business operate and manage parts of the Surinamese forest, for which they have a user license. They processes the logs into wood products like lumber, doors, flooring and plywood.
The industry is working on a sustainable development of the national forest and wood industry. To achieve this, improvement of operating efficiency (efficiency and productivity), an increase in round wood production and an adjustment of the levy system is needed.
As part of maintaining sustainability, the sector tries to solve the adverse effects to the environment caused by production increase.
The sector is united in the ABE (Associatie van bosexploitanten), the Ashu (Agemene Surinaamse Houtunie) and PHS (Timber Sector Platform Suriname ), which is facilitated by the Chamber of Commerce.
Government
The government is formulating the law and regulations in a participatory manner. It ensures that the objectives of the forest policy does not conflict with overall national development objectives of the MOP. Also, the agreements which are reached within international treaties, including the Convention RIO – should be reflected in the policy and its implementation.
The government owns the forest and is in charge of who gets user rights and concessions. She is responsible for the concession policy and the levy system, and she verifies compliance with the forest law.
Governmental organizations involved are LBB (‘s Lands Bosbeheer) and SBB (Stichting voor Bosbeheer en Bostoezicht).
CSOs
CSOS are fighting for socio-cultural and ecological interests. Some examples are the various activities of WWF-Guiana, managing a nature reserve by Conservation International, the sustainable management of a community forest by STEPS, forestry research of CELOS, and conservation projects STINASU.
Civil society organizations play a major role in the national awareness of sustainability and security of the interior.
